The Importance of Proper Maintenance

How Regularly Scheduled Maintenance can Increase the Life of Your Vehicle

We have all seen movies and television shows in which there is a dad harping on his kids the importance of car maintenance. We tend to laugh at the seemingly overprotective parent, but vehicle maintenance is actually a vital part of owning a car. Even if you buy a car new there are things that you will have to maintain. Regularly scheduled maintenance can significantly increase the life of your car and will cost significantly less than replacing a car that was never properly maintained. Here is some of the regular maintenance that will improve and extend the life of your vehicle.

Brake Maintenance

Many people are under the assumption that you have to replace the entire brake system from time to time, but that is not always the case. There are times where you may have to replace the rotors if they become warped and that can be expensive, but with regular brake pad replacement you can increase the life of the rotors without costing you a significant amount of money. Some people may ignore a simple squeak when they apply the brakes, but the simple fix will save you from a much larger complication later down the line.

Rotating Tires

Tire costs have skyrocketed in recent years and most people dread the thought of having to replace all four tires. The life of your tires can be extended with regular tire rotation. The front tires of a vehicle generally have the most wear and tear on them. By rotating the tires of your vehicle every 6 to 8 thousand miles you can greatly extend the life of the tires. It should also be noted that having the same brand and size on all of your tires be the same will also extend their life.

Change the Oil

This part of maintenance is very inexpensive, but vital to the life of your vehicle. Many people fail to realize that their engine is run by the oil in their vehicle. Oil can corrode and become thick over time from the natural heating up and cooling down of the engine. As the oil becomes thicker it cannot flow as freely through the components of the vehicle and can actually cause the engine to lock up.

The best way to keep your engine running smooth is to have the oil changed every 3000 miles depending on the type of vehicle you drive and how many miles is on the vehicle. The type of oil is also important to your individual vehicle. That is why it is recommended that you take your vehicle to a licensed service department to ensure that the proper oil is added so there are no larger issues from using the wrong type of oil for your car.

Belts and Hoses

The components of your vehicle are comprised of a number of belts and hoses that can wear down over time. Belts and hoses are easily and very inexpensively replaced, but without having a professional check out your car you may not know there is a problem until it is too late and there is a much larger problem to contend with.

Fluids

There are a number of fluids that run through your vehicle to allow for all the parts to move properly. As we have already discussed the importance of oil, there is also brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, and even windshield wiper fluid. The average vehicle owner may know where one of these fluids are, but likely does not know where they all are or the proper fill levels. Regularly scheduled maintenance allows for a licensed mechanic to be able to check these vital fluids on a regular basis and add them to the car as needed. That means that fluid level will be one more thing that you yourself will not have to contend with in your busy day.
