Tips to Keep you and Your Family Safe This Summer on the Roadways

Summer is fast approaching. It will not be long now when the kids are out for the summer and families all over the map will be looking for activities to keep the family occupied and have a little fun. Ohio has become a destination spot for many during the summer months with many families heading out to Sandusky’s Cedar Point Theme Park for a little fun and countless other activities that can be enjoyed this time of year. If you are looking to get out on the roadways this summer, there are some things you may need to be aware of since Ohio is now ranked the fifth most traveled state in America. Here are some tips that will ensure that you have an enjoyable and safe summer season.

Have a Watchful Eye

It is not enough to be a safe driver while traveling. Many people claim that they have never been involved in an accident because they are a good driver. You may be the best driver on the roadways, but that will not always be enough. There are countless others who inhabit the roads that may not be as cautious as you. It is important that you watch out for other drivers that change lanes without signaling or simply drive in a very careless manner. Distractions may happen, but it is vital that you keep your eyes on the road as well as other drivers at all times.

Minimize Distractions

Travel is a fun and exciting time for everyone involved. Distractions can occur from outside the car, but are more common within your vehicle. Children do not mean to be a distraction, but have the ability to distract more than anything else. It is important that you train your children to keep the noise within the vehicle at a minimum. This cannot always be controlled with very small children and therefore it may be beneficial to have someone sit in the rear of the vehicle to keep the kids occupied.

Have a Spare

The tires of our vehicles are highly important. Tires become warn overtime and if we do not pay attention to the ware of our tires, we can have a flat tire at any time. The speed of driving on the highway and the heat of summer enable tires to ware out faster than at other times within the year. In the event of a flat tire you do not want to be sitting on the side of the road waiting for someone to bring you a tire, so you always need to make sure that your spare tire is in your car and is fully inflated. In addition to your spare tire you also want to ensure that your car jack and lug wrench is available and in good order.

Have a Backup Plan

When traveling we tend to set aside a certain amount of money to accomplish what we plan on doing during our trip. Many families have a vacation fund that they set aside throughout the year for the specific purpose of having fun through the summer, but they do not account for the case that an emergency occurs while they are traveling. It is highly recommended that you have a credit card or extra cash somewhere that you can access in the event of an emergency. An emergency can be anything from a vehicle breakdown to an unexpected stop due to a medical emergency. Being prepared is always best just in case something happens.

Do your Research

Your travels will take you through many areas and some you may not be so familiar with. Crime rates are different throughout the country and are something that you need to be aware of. It is important that you have a general idea of where you wish to travel and research the areas to be aware of any heightened crime therein. No one wants to think of their travels in this light, but being informed can keep you and your family safe.
